Thoughts From the Coffee Table: What do you suppose he thinks about all day?
I was recently having a conversation about the art of negotiation. We negotiate all day in so many ways.
Some are (seemingly) minor negotiations, like kids trying to avoid eating vegis or the couple who argues over who will take out the garbage. Some are how we negotiate with ourselves. “I can have that cake because I went to the gym today.” Others are multi-million dollar business deals. What do they all have in common?
We each are trying to get our own way. To come out on top.
I know, I know. Don’t tell me that we are not all that selfish. I know we are not. But there is truth to the statement.
I interviewed someone yesterday who, when asked about a former leader of his whom he valued, spoke of a woman who was passionate about negotiating win/win scenarios. That stuck with me through the day.
What does it really take to find common paths? To slow down. To listen. To think.
Negotiations can have these elements when we are mindful of the bigger picture and our role to facilitate that vision. I find that the more questions that I ask in the process, the more I can identify those opportunities for common ground.
