Thoughts From the Coffee Table: There is a reason that some recipes stand the test of time. They are dependable and satisfying.
Twice a year I get sucked into the vortex of the Hallmark Channel. Yep, I admit it. Flagrantly sappy love stories that put a romance novel into 2 hours.
Wait, I’m sorry. We aren’t supposed to call them romance novels anymore. They are escape literature.
As I watched this week with giddy girl-like joy, however, I realized something. These movies follow a very simple recipe. Clean, pure ingredients mixed in exactly the same way. Every time.
Girl meets boy. One lives in a fast paced world, one in small town America. There is a reason to be hesitant with each other, and always a force that tries to keep them apart, yet that force is never truly malicious. They find love.
At the last moment something threatens to pull them apart, and then they come to their senses and are united. And before you know it, despite your commitment to turn off the TV at the end, the next show starts again seamlessly.
I have one more night to give into this vortex. One more night of smiles and tears. One more chance to leave reality behind before chaos ensues.
And one more time to enjoy a truly dependable and satisfying recipe. Of love.
