Thoughts From the Coffee Table: She worked for me long ago, and called out of the blue, frustrated with a new role in a new company where her predecessor had been a tyrant. After 9 months she still couldn’t get a handle on her team.
“I made the mistake of coming in too soft knowing these people had been beaten before. And now I feel like they take advantage of me every time I turn around. I can’t get us moving in the same direction and now my department is missing targets. I have been rallying myself every morning. I go in to work feeling whole and ready to take on the world, but at the end of the day I feel like I’ve been run over by a steamroller.”
We spent about an hour strategizing a reboot, developing a plan to engage in open and honest dialogue, and setting new expectations. New rules of engagement. New focus on short-term wins in order to get her team to budget before December 31.
I sent her this pic that I took earlier this month. It got her laughing so hard she was crying, and I could hear her release from tension and frustration.
She went in this week fresh, and a note this morning says her efforts are taking root.
Sometimes you’re the shoe, and sometimes the gum. And sometimes you can step around.
