Thoughts From the Coffee Table: Last week I had a slight wardrobe malfunction in the airport. I ducked into a bathroom, quickly resolved the issue and began to walk out.
I stopped myself before leaving and turned to wash my hands. I had no reason to wash my hands. There was no one near to see if I washed my hands. But my brain said that regardless of the reason you enter a bathroom, you should always wash your hands. So I did. My OCD felt much better.
It made me think about how many people I have lead throughout my career. And how many seemed to only do the right things when people were looking.
Don’t get me wrong. I had plenty of talented and dedicated folks who I had to force to actually go on vacation and turn off their phones. But the ones that kept me up at night were those who put a great deal of effort into looking busy only when I was looking.
While at NSA #Influence18 conference there was a woman in the gift shop dusting shelves. I made a joke about the joys of dusting, asking if it was a part of her job. “No. I just have a lot of downtime each day and I like having this place look nice.”
She wasn’t the owner. She wasn’t the manager. She simply had pride in her work and her work environment.
When no one was watching.
