Thoughts From the Coffee Table: I am often scurrying through airports, rushing to get to the next plane. Last Friday I had a 3 hour layover at MSP, early in the morning.
I usually settle myself into the Delta Sky Club to work, but decided Friday was the day to just walk. Around an hour and 4 miles later, my eyes were open. What changes there have been since I began a life of travel over 20 years ago!
An airport now is a city. Traffic jams of people. Amazing restaurants (what a change!). World-class shopping. Musical entertainment. Even the blare of horns from eager transport carts filled with people on crutches.
Along one terminal a busy bakery manned by 5 pastry chefs delivered fresh donuts with mouthwatering toppings.
There was a vibrancy in the air. A sense of anticipation. I saw more smiles than frustrated and weary travelers. Groups of students off on adventures. A family heading home from Disney-Someplace. A bachelorette party headed to Vegas.
This one business venue has grown and adapted. It has LISTENED to the voice of the customer. Airports like MSP are inviting people to WANT to fly through them.
No longer is the destination the only joyful part of travel. And here, retail is not dead.
It is thriving.
