Thoughts From the Coffee Table: I did not build sandcastles. I preferred to gather seashells.
I watch children build sandcastles, some giggling with glee as the waves knock down walls, others with tears of frustration. No matter how sturdy your structure, Mother Nature always wins.
I have a friend who’s work environment has changed dramatically. New top leadership, heightened stress, increased workload. She loves her job. Well, she loved her job. She built her career there and now the security of 18 years is being washed away, with no way to hold back the tide.
I feel for her. And I have also been that change that some considered negative. I can see both sides of the sand dollar.
I wonder if I preferred gathering seashells because I was less concerned with my castle walls than I was in finding the next treasure. I am always willing to give up a shell in my hand, when its more perfect version is found. I made many career moves, with the next one always taking me farther.
There is beauty in building a castle on your piece of beach. Committed to making it the best, to supporting the structures, adapting to the waves in order to keep it in tact.
Should she leave? Should she stay? There is no right answer. Only the decision to shovel or sift.
