Italian Market

The Heights of Success

Thoughts From the Coffee Table: 30 feet tall. Covered in lard. Topped with salami, cheese and envelopes of money.

Each Spring at the Italian Market Festival in Philly, teams of hopeful people attempt to scale this pole in order to grab the goodies at the top.

There are no rules. There are no other imposed barriers to your success. The pole is not re-greased after another teams’ attempt.

The difficulty is clear, the prizes are minimal. There is danger. You will get messy.

Each year when I watch this spectacle I hear the voices of those I coach and train each day. “You don’t know my market.” “You don’t understand the complexity of our competition.” “We have unique challenges.”

We are so quick to set our own limitations and accept them as barriers to our success. And truly, there are barriers to  success. I can’t deny that. And yet each year people attempt something this daunting. Why?

Their eyes are hopeful. There is laughter. There is strategy. They learn from their own mistakes and successes, and from those of others.

And most importantly, they don’t let a slippery 30 foot pole dispel their belief that they can, and will, achieve.
