Thoughts From the Coffee Table: My glass is half full. Of whole milk. I like to live on the edge.
I have always wondered what it would be like to have something go viral. And also hoped it would be something positive.
This morning I sent a Tweet that, for me, is going viral. Almost 650 likes, more than 100 retweets and over a dozen comments in less than 3 hours.
The problem? Many (not all) of those comments are mean or obnoxious or just ignorant. For a person who tries to keep positive at the forefront, why am I more concerned with the few negatives?
At first I read them all. And lost my focus. Then I decided to ignore them all, but that means I also ignore the positive comments from thoughtful, caring people. So now I am reflecting on the reality of our uncensored world today.
The words we use can harm or help, from a colleague to a clerk at the store to our family and friends. We have power in the written and spoken word. And we have the ability to listen to opposing viewpoints with grace. And class.
