Thoughts From the Coffee Table: Now this is my idea of a salad!
By happenstance I sat next to Restauranteur Branden McRill on a flight and enjoyed chatting with him about his newest venture in Philly, Walnut Street Cafe.
Of course I had to go!
We enjoyed a relaxed meal in the bar at a cafe table, and were blown away by so many examples of excellence.
The food is spectacular. A plate of house-made sausage and pickled vegetables on a pillow of mustard seeds. A lamb pappardelle with house-made noodles and a crunchy pistachios. An amazing wedge salad and a killer hanger steak.
But the team was something to behold.
Everyone who brought us food or drink was perfect and personable. The man who brought my steak said “This may be too well done for you. If it is not to your liking we will be happy to fix it.” Wow! How many times do food runners simply drop off a plate and….run?
As it turned out, the cut of meat and preparation was so great that there was no way I would have sent it back.
Finally, Kalina was our server. A perfect match of personality, interaction, professionalism and joy. A meal is only as great as the person who creates your experience, and she made us feel genuinely appreciated and welcome.
We will go back. I have more to eat!
