Thoughts From the Coffee Table: I read a quote: “If speaking kindly to plants helps them grow, imagine what speaking kindly to humans can do.”
Last week, I cleared US customs and was going through security for my connecting flight. The lines were moving slowly, and I watched a TSA agent be rude and condescending to many people. It appeared that he enjoyed making people wait.
I was tired and frustrated, and I let it show. It cost me a longer wait, but it really cost a piece of my soul. I let his rudeness get to me.
Saturday we went to see the Terracotta Warrior exhibit. Spectacular!
After reading one of the plaques, a woman proceeded to stand right in front of it. There was no one else even near us, she knew I was waiting, and she could have viewed the statue from much better angles. It appeared she enjoyed making me wait.
“Would you mind if I just took a quick picture of the plaque?” I didn’t even need her to move.
“Actually, I would mind.”
I walked away, lamenting how I responded to the TSA agent. I let his rudeness make me rude in response. I wasn’t going to do it twice in as many days.
So like this General, I plastered a smile on my face, and let her have her moment of victory. It cost me nothing. But a little longer wait.
