Thoughts From the Coffee Table: The Essex House is an amazing hotel in NYC overlooking Central Park. I have been blessed to stay there for business a few times. Every time I walk in I am greeted by the most amazing floral displays. They are true works of art.
I have never eaten in the restaurant, Southgate. We always have someplace to be, and there is also a stupidly wonderful pizza place out back with butter garlic knots. I digress.
I was not staying in NYC this time, but decided to have lunch since I was walking by. Quiet on a sunny Tuesday, I took a place at the bar to be able to work, look out, and relax.
The food was amazing (wild king salmon), the wine lovely (Barton & Guestier Chablis), but the true gem was Bappy. Yes, the bartender’s name is Bappy.
Each person working in that restaurant gave me a warm smile and welcomed me openly. There was a vibe that was simply lovely. It could be easy to be stuffy given the address of this hotel. Last time we stayed, guests from the UN filled the hotel. I was a bit out of place.
True excellence requires genuine people, comfortable and confident in themselves. This team has that in spades.
Next time I will suggest we eat at Southgate. After we have a butter garlic knots appetizer, of course.
